Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It’s the most common form of dementia and is not a normal part of aging. Early diagnosis and proper care can improve quality of life and slow progression.

Alzheimer’s primarily affects older adults, especially those over 65. However, it can also appear earlier. Risk factors include age, genetics, poor cardiovascular health, and low education levels. In Ghana, many elders go undiagnosed due to limited awareness and access to care.

Common signs include:
Memory loss that disrupts daily life
Difficulty completing familiar tasks
Confusion with time or place
Trouble with words or speaking
Mood changes and withdrawal from social activities

In some communities, Alzheimer’s symptoms are wrongly attributed to witchcraft or spiritual punishment. This leads to stigma, neglect, and mistreatment of elders. Alzheimer's Ghana works to educate families and faith leaders to replace fear with understanding and compassion.

Alzheimer’s Ghana is the leading organization supporting Ghanaians affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias. We connect churches, companies, families, and volunteers across the region to share information, work together, and improve the quality of care for our elders.

To improve the lives of Ghanaians affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias through education, advocacy, and compassionate care. We work to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and empower families, caregivers, and communities to support elders with dignity and understanding.
To build a Ghana where every older adult living with Alzheimer’s or related dementias is understood, supported, and cared for—free from stigma, isolation, or neglect. We envision communities that embrace compassion, caregivers who are empowered, and systems that prioritize elder dignity and mental health.
At the Alzheimer’s & Related Disorders Association Ghana (ARDAG), our mission is to improve the lives of Ghanaians affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias through education, advocacy, and compassionate care. We envision a Ghana where every older adult living with dementia is understood, supported, and treated with dignity—free from stigma, isolation, or neglect.
We are guided by values that reflect both heart and purpose:
Compassion, because every elder deserves empathy and respect.
Education, because awareness is the first step toward change.
Collaboration, because families, churches, and health workers must unite.
Integrity, because transparency builds trust.
In Ghana, many older adults living with dementia face misunderstanding, isolation, and limited access to care. Volunteers like you help bridge that gap—bringing compassion, awareness, and practical support to families and communities. Your time and heart can transform lives.
We believe in transparency, impact, and gratitude. Every donation helps us train caregivers, host community workshops, and provide medical screenings for elders in need. We share regular updates and stories so you can see the difference your support makes.

"ARDAG’s outreach programs have changed how we talk about dementia in our clinics. Families are more open, and elders are finally getting the support they deserve."
"Volunteering with ARDAG has been life-changing. I’ve learned so much about compassion, and I’ve seen firsthand how education can break the stigma around Alzheimer’s."
"Our congregation used to believe dementia was a spiritual punishment. ARDAG helped us understand the truth—and now we offer care, not judgment."
